Caring for your new hair
Beautiful extensions are an investment, and a little daily care keeps them soft, full, and lasting their longest. Here is everything, step by step.
Start here
The first 48 hours
Everything settles in the first two days. Give it that time.
- Wait 48 hours before the first wash so the install sets.
- Skip hard workouts, steam rooms, and saunas during this window.
- A little tightness at the scalp is normal while it adjusts. It eases within days.
Daily
Brushing
Gentle, regular brushing is the single habit that keeps extensions tangle-free.
- Use a loop brush or a soft wet brush, never a fine-tooth comb through the rows.
- Brush two or three times a day, including before bed and before washing.
- Hold the hair at the root with one hand and brush from the ends up, a section at a time.
- Be gentlest at the nape, where friction from collars and pillows builds up.
Two to three times a week
Washing
- Wash no more than two or three times a week. Extensions don't get oily the way your scalp does.
- Sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner only.
- Shampoo the scalp and roots. Let the suds rinse through the lengths; no scrubbing the wefts.
- Conditioner from mid-lengths to ends, kept off the rows.
- Brush through before you step in. Squeeze water out afterward; never wring or pile hair on top of your head.
Every wash
Drying
- Dry the rows and wefts completely, every time. Damp wefts can slip and smell.
- Blow dry cool to warm, pointing the nozzle down the hair shaft.
- A leave-in or heat protectant on the lengths before you dry.
Styling
Heat and styling
- Heat protectant before any hot tool, without exception.
- Keep tools under 350°F. Remy hair holds a curl at lower heat than you'd expect.
- Keep irons and dryers off the wefts themselves. Style the hair, not the row.
- Braids, low ponytails, and soft waves are all safe. Tight, high ponytails pull at the install.
Color
Color and toning
- Toning and glossing are fine in the hands of your stylist. Lifting or bleaching is not.
- No box dye and no at-home lightener. The hair won't come back from it.
- Purple shampoo once a week at most, rinsed well, with conditioner on the ends after.
- Tell your stylist at your next visit if the tone has shifted warmer or cooler.
Nightly
Sleeping
- Only ever sleep with the hair fully dry.
- A loose braid or low ponytail keeps it from matting overnight.
- A silk or satin pillowcase cuts friction and keeps the cuticle smooth.
Out and about
Swimming, sun, and protection
- Before a pool or the ocean, wet the hair with clean water and work conditioner through the lengths.
- Swim in a braid, then rinse as soon as you're out.
- Chlorine, salt, and sun all dry and fade the hair over time. A UV leave-in in summer helps.
- Watch for sunscreen and self-tanner on the hair. Both can stain lighter shades.
Maintenance
Move-ups about every six weeks
Hand-tied rows grow out with your natural hair and need to be lifted back up.
- Book a move-up every six to eight weeks, before tension shows at the root.
- Your stylist sets the timing. Faster-growing hair means sooner.
- The hair itself lasts through many move-ups with this care.
